Looking for the Best Co-working spaces in Austin? I have been building web and mobile apps out of my home office in Southwest Austin for many years. I even have a large, dedicated office that’s separate from the main part of the house. The best part of the setup is my huge desk with four large monitors. At one point, I even had a full tower setup instead of a laptop.

But working from home, despite the extra space, can be a distraction. Over the years, I’ve worked in and out of numerous coworking spaces. Recently, I’ve gotten the itch to jump back into a new workspace.

WeWork

The main location I’ve used is downtown Austin at Congress and 6th Street. It spans several floors and offers everything from private offices to dedicated desks to open common areas.

I first worked there for a client pre-COVID, and at that time there was a waiting list—the place was packed. Parking is difficult. I used to park for free farther down South Congress and then take a scooter to the building. That worked well, but overall it’s a little pricey for me.

Dwell

This is on the opposite end of the spectrum from WeWork. Dwell pricing was under $100 per month for shared desk space—wow. It’s also located in Southwest Austin, about two miles from my house, so I can get there in five minutes. The commute from downtown Austin to my house can easily take over an hour during rush hour, so that’s a big plus.

The reason it’s so affordable is that it’s located inside a church, using the space during weekdays when it’s not in use. It’s more of a modern, rock-and-roll-style church, so it doesn’t feel too unusual.

The HVAC situation isn’t the best—the ceilings are about 40 feet tall—so it can get pretty cold during the winter. I might give this place another shot.

Free Coworking Options in Austin

One really cool place to work is the Austin Central Library Or at least it used to be. It’s a massive, modern building with great views and even an art gallery. You do have to pay for parking or figure out transportation. They also have rooms you can reserve.

I haven’t been back in a while, but a friend mentioned it’s gotten more crowded and less ideal for working. That said, some of the other community libraries around town are still great options. The one near my house in Oak Hill has desks and is quiet.

How Is the WiFi?

“Super-fast WiFi” is always a selling point for coworking spaces, but in reality, it’s often hit or miss. I pay extra for an unlimited 5G hotspot on my phone, which I find faster and more secure, so I usually use that instead.

During my time at WeWork, the internet was typically just okay—not amazing. Most of Austin has solid 5G coverage, with one exception being some of the bars I’ve worked from in Circle C.

Cool Bars, Coffee Shops, and Restaurants to Work From in Austin

One of the most well-known coffee shops in town is Mozart’s. It’s located on the lake and has a large outdoor area. They host music and events and offer some indoor seating as well. It’s a great spot to get a few hours of work done when the weather is nice, but not ideal for a full workday.

Radio Coffee & Beer in South Austin is another good option, though it’s also mostly outdoors. The biggest issue with outdoor workspaces is the lack of power outlets, but a good power bank can solve that.

I also like setting up in comfortable, quieter bars inside higher-end hotels in downtown Austin—they can be surprisingly good work environments.
